Ahead of Thanksgiving week, travelers are at Newark Liberty International Airport, but they might be met with some delays this morning.
So far Friday morning, there have been over 20 delays, and five cancellations.
The Federal Aviation Administration says they might need to slow down air traffic for holiday travel times because of air traffic controller staffing shortages, particularly in the northeast, and the New York region.
They say the slowdowns are for safety reasons.
Remember, earlier this year, the agency moved responsibility for handling the Newark area air traffic to its facility in Philadelphia. That was in an effort to have good staffing levels.
TSA is prepared for the busiest Thanksgiving travel period on record and is projected to screen 18.3 million people from Tuesday, Nov. 26 to Monday, Dec. 2, representing a volume increase of approximately 6% from this time in 2023.
TSA says the busiest travel day for flyers will be Tuesday.
"We woke up early to get here, make sure we're on time, but unfortunately our flight isn't on time," said one flyer.
"I feel like every year you know there are going to be holiday delays. I think a reason a reason I'm so hesitant to travel over the holidays is the holiday delays," said another flyer.
