A little girl who fell into a lake at Branch Brook Park in Newark is lucky to be alive.
An Essex County sheriff’s officer was there to pull the girl out of the lake.
Officials say that when a mother couldn’t find her 4-year-old daughter, she found a sheriff’s officer who called for backup. Once they realized that the girl was in the water, they both jumped into action.
"She sees the child's scooter, her little scooter. She has the scooter here by the water. She starts screaming. She sees the child in the water - she jumps in, the officer jumps in with her. The officer picks up the child. The woman jumps on his back because she was afraid he was going to drown so he carries the mother and the child out,” says Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura.
The officer performed CPR on the child as an ambulance arrived.
She was taken to the hospital. Officials say that her condition was “promising.”
