The Essex County community is reflecting on the legacy of Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver.
Oliver died Aug. 1 after being hospitalized the day before for an undisclosed medical issue. A cause of death has not yet been released. She was 71 years old.
Oliver lived in East Orange for more than 40 years and left a significant impact on the community, according to residents.
She was able to do this, with an aim for the people who continue to operate in politics, because everyone knew she had an army behind her," said Assemblywoman Britnee Timberlake. "And the first line of defense was Black women. Who we know is responsible for electing every single statewide official here in New Jersey but all the way to Washington. And she would love that…right here right now."
Residents tell News 12 that they appreciate her years of service and know that her influence will live on for future generations.
“To see someone reach that position has got to be positive for those kids who are coming up behind her,” said Gregory Thompson of East Orange.
Gov. Murphy now has until Sept. 15 to name a new second in command. He does not have to have the Legislature sign off on the pick.
