The Edgewater Borough Council has approved a measure to control the goose population in the town.
The borough will contract USDA Wildlife Services to gas the geese to euthanize them, a plan that animal rights activists opposed.
"There's definitely a more humane solution to what they're deciding. It's very disheartening to see this," says Edgewater resident Amanda Marshall.
Mayor Michael McPartland says that the biggest concern is that much of the town was becoming inundated with goose droppings, and that children play near them.
Edgewater officials previously told News 12 New Jersey that they have tried several different methods for goose population over the years besides gassing, but none of them worked.
