A child was killed and two drivers were hospitalized following an overnight crash on the New Jersey Turnpike in Mercer County.
According to NJ State Police, the crash took place in the truck lanes of the turnpike around 1:29 a.m. in East Windsor. Police say a Freightliner tractor-trailer was traveling southbound when it struck the rear of a Subaru that was also heading south with a juvenile in the rear seat.
Following the initial crash, the tractor-trailer then continued forward and struck a Volvo box truck before veering off the roadway and hitting a guardrail.
"As a result of the crash, the juvenile rear seat passenger of the Subaru sustained fatal injuries," state police said in a statement. "The driver of the Freightliner and driver of the Subaru sustained moderate injuries."
The driver of the tractor-trailer and the driver of the Subaru were also transported to a local hospital. Police say they sustained moderate injuries.
The crash resulted in extensive delays on the turnpike in the southbound truck lanes. The turnpike car lanes were closed through that area overnight due to ongoing construction
No additional information was released, and police say the crash remains under investigation.
