Local summer at the beach means weekend festivals. Perhaps a boost to the economy here over the next few weeks. Yeah. But was the summer of 2023? Booming or busting for businesses? And how did folks spend their habit, spend their change and change their spending habits? Perhaps? News. 12 New Jersey's Jim Murdoch is joining us now. He's made his way over to Gordon's surf shop and Jim, you've been in Point Pleasant Beach here all morning. Mostly the reaction regarding the summer has been positive. It sounds like it has. And that's a good thing because small businesses are the backbone to the local economy and they're the anchor to the community. And that's what we're talking about here, Gordon Surf shop. We've got Craig Gordon, the owner. Thank you for joining us. You've been in business for about a decade here. A couple of different locations in the downtown business district here in Point Pleasant Beach. We were just talking, how was for you? The summer of 2023? It was a, it was a pretty slow start but ended up being a good summer. A lot of challenges. Weather was always a deciding factor. We wildfires, you know, we had some, some colder weather in June, July and by August it finally felt like it was summer. It's got to be a good time of year now to run a surf shop with the waves we've had coming in now for the last couple of weeks. Oh, yeah. It's local summer. I always look forward to like September, October. We're going to have a lot of waves, uh, selling wet suits, surfboards, doing a lot of surfboard repair. It basically gets me through to the holidays. Yeah. So you're one of those businesses who maintains a presence here all year long. How do you stay open? I asked the folks from Jersey Shore barbecue the same question when Bay Avenue turns into Tumbleweed Alley in February. Yeah. Tumbleweed Tuesday. Uh, so, yeah, you just, uh, you have to change your game plan every year and just try to maintain through, through the off season. I do close two days to work on boards now that I haven't done before. Just because that's such a big part of my business and you just do the weekends. So, what do you rate the summer of 2023 out of your decade or so? I would say it's probably like out of 10, like six. Ok. Yeah. Got a high end, middle there. Middle. Yeah. All right. Very good. Local summer is in full swing along many beaches with some upcoming festival set here for the weekend. It could be another boost to the economy for the next couple of weeks. But some question to ask is, was the summer of 2023 a boom or bust for businesses. And how did your spending habits change this year? All good questions. News. 12. New Jersey's Jim Murdoch is finding out he joins us. He is with the people at Jersey Shore barbecue in Point Pleasant Beach. Good morning, Jim. Good morning guys. Back in the studio. We're here in a rainy point, Pleasant Beach to kick off this Wednesday morning with Douglas Walsh from Jersey Shore barbecue. I've been there a few times. It's a good barbecue and you recently opened up this location here in Point Pleasant Beach three years ago, right in the middle of the pandemic. But was this summer a boom or a bust this summer was a boom. I want to say that obviously much better than the last two summers and people are starting to come out a little bit more and a little bit more. We're really thrilled to be in Point, Pleasant Beach. You know, because you're a restaurant in town here on Arnold Avenue, right in the middle of Downtown Point Pleasant Beach weather, not as great as an effect as the beaches. But I think we could talk about the inflation. The price increase is what we've seen and anyone going out to eat has seen those prices on the menu skyrocket. How has that really impacted you and the spending habit? It impacts all the restaurant industry. We're really um you try to keep your prices in check, but it becomes a luxury item when you people want to go out to dinner. So one of the things we did was open up for breakfast. It's a more cost effective meal for many people. And we're happy to be serving breakfast now and to get people down here in the off season, you know, we've got a seafood festival coming up in just a couple of days here in town, these shoulder season events, how important are they and how do you stay open all winter, let's say February when it's 12 degrees outside and Tumbleweeds are on Arnold Avenue, not the throngs of people like in July. You know what? We try to do some nonconventional marketing really. We focus on events that draw people to the restaurant. Our locals are the plasma and backbone of what we do. So we really focus on catering to the locals and you know, obviously putting out a great product every day. Thank you, Douglas Walsh from Jersey Shore barbecue right at Arnold Avenue.
