A Camden man has been charged with murder after authorities said he fatally beat a woman with a baseball bat late Wednesday night.

Enoch Rembert, 28, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Lisa Mellet, 51, of Camden, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

Paramedics responded at about 11:29 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, to the area of 5th Street and Bailey Street for a report of an unconscious woman in the road.

The woman, later identified as Mellet, was taken to Cooper University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at about 12:24 a.m. Thursday.

The Gloucester-Camden-Salem County Medical Examiner’s Office later determined the cause of death to be blunt abdominal trauma and ruled the death a homicide.

Authorities said surveillance video obtained during the investigation showed Rembert walking to the area of 5th Street and Erie Street and repeatedly striking the victim multiple times with a baseball bat.

After the assault, investigators said the victim walked to the area of 5th Street and Bailey Street, where she collapsed.

Police said detectives also determined the suspect and victim were previously acquainted from the neighborhood.

Rembert was arrested in Camden and remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility.

He is also charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
