A cab driver whose vehicle was hit, killing his passenger, spoke out Friday against the driver of the vehicle that hit him.
Wearing a neck brace and speaking through Fernando Mateo, of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers, cab driver Freddie Nicolas said that the driver of the other vehicle is a murderer because that driver's speed was excessive.
Nicolas said that he was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Rosedale Avenue and the Cross Bronx Expressway service road when he was hit. He doesn't remember much and says that he became unconscious.
According to police, 37-year-old Hernan Vega was driving a Dodge Charger while under the influence of alcohol at around 8 a.m. Thursday when he slammed into the back of the livery cab, killing its passenger.
The victim has been identified as 27-year-old Pamela Pimentel, of the Bedford Park section of the Bronx. Police say she had just left the home that she shared with her husband and was headed to work at the BP gas station on Webster Avenue at the time of the accident. Pimentel was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The cab driver was taken to Einstein Hospital in stable condition.
Authorities say Vega had two other people in his vehicle; they were taken to Jacobi Medical Center with minor injuries. He is facing a number of charges, including driving while impaired and vehicular manslaughter.
