NJ bill would prohibit AI from replacing teachers in public school classrooms

A proposed bill at the State House would prohibit public schools from replacing teachers with AI.
New Jersey Assemblywoman Heather Simmons (D-3) introduced the "Educators Before AI Act" last week. If passed, the legislation would require public school employees to be human, placing limits on the use of artificial intelligence in public education.
"AI is an important resource and tool for our teachers, but it's not something that can and should be replacing them in our children's classroom," said Simmons.
While New Jersey has not seen AI replace teachers, Simmons said lawmakers have an opportunity to establish safeguards before that becomes a possibility.
"Just the thought of them not having that constant interaction with a mature adult in the classroom who can provide connection and empathy and judgment...is something that I think we should be frightened of," said Simmons.
The legislation comes as some schools in New Jersey are beginning to explore AI-powered learning models. A new private school set to open on the campus of Drew University in Madison plans to use adaptive learning technology, allowing students in first through eighth grade to move at their own pace. However, the school will also provide students with access to human learning coaches.
Several New Jersey parents and former students News 12 spoke with expressed support for maintaining a human presence in classrooms.
"I don't see that it's productive for that to be the only thing you have or have that be a crutch that enables or encourages them not to have a human interaction," said Gage Johnson, whose children attended New Jersey public schools.
Former student Adonijah Campbell echoed those concerns. "Even just social skills, picking those up from somebody, you can't get that from a computer or AI," Campbell said.
Jean White, who has kids of her own in public school and works as a teacher's aide, told News 12 she can't imagine a classroom without a human teacher.
"I don't want to see them get replaced because they are vital," said White.
The bill has been introduced in the Assembly and awaits further legislative action.
