A row of small businesses and apartments along St. Georgers Avenue in Woodbridge now stands charred, with broken windows.
But one of the owners, Javier Velez, is staying positive, despite the devastation.
"We are also optimistic because there is not testimony without a test," Velez said. "This is the test for us."
The fire occurred around 3 a.m. When officials arrived at the scene, the second-floor apartments were engulfed in flames.
Four people were trapped inside the apartments. Officials were able to rescue them through the windows.
Just like in martials arts, Velez says it is about learning from every from punch, learning that same discipline now as he searches for a new place to bring his studio and his students back together.
Aside from his Studio, 3 other businesses also suffered loss, including Woodbridge dog groomer Colleen's Canine Clippers, Velez Jiu Jitsu martial arts, Omis Barber shop and a printing and marketing business.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
