A Bay Ridge cannabis dispensary opened its doors for a soft launch after months of opposition from residents.

Kaya Bliss was open on Tuesday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

“We had a rush of people the first hour,” said Edgar Kleydman, CEO of Kaya Bliss. “I think you have your protesters, and I think you have three to four times as many people who want us here.”

The soft launch was a stark contrast to over the summer when Bay Ridge residents organized protests against the dispensary, citing concerns about its proximity to schools and houses of worship.

"It is not the proper place to open a marijuana dispensary," Assembly Member Michael Tannousis told News 12.

Kleydman says the dispensary has strict protocols in place to address concerns about underage access.

“No child can ever come in here. We scan IDs. If you don’t have an ID, you can’t come in here—even if you’re my age,” he said.

Some residents remain apprehensive.

“It gives the message that substance use is accepted by the community, and I don’t think it’s the right message,” said Michael Mooney, a Bay Ridge resident.

Kleydman hopes the community will grow more accepting as Kaya Bliss plans a hard launch on Valentine’s Day.
