Local officials in Old Tappan say they plan to follow a number of townships' leads in pre-emptively banning marijuana sales irrespective of a state law legalizing pot.
According to Mayor John Kramer, he thinks there are too many problems associated with legalized marijuana, and that would outweigh estimated returns in local revenue.
The Old Tappan Borough Council says it plans to draft prohibitions on marijuana.
The bill being considered by the state Legislature would make marijuana legal for anyone who is at least 21 years old and would further expand medical access to the drug.
However, a number of towns across the state have implemented ordinances that would ban growing or selling marijuana within municipal limits.
