Mahwah is banning marijuana sales ahead of a bill currently in the state Legislature that would legalize marijuana statewide if passed.
The Mahwah Township Council adopted the prohibitions unanimously Thursday.
According to the Record, the prohibitions will block all marijuana establishments from opening in Mahwah, including dispensaries and cultivation facilities.
The prohibitions do not apply to sales of prescribed medicinal marijuana, which is legal in New Jersey.
A bill currently being considered by the state Legislature would make marijuana legal for anyone who is at least 21, and would further expand medical access to the drug.
Mahwah's prohibitions include a "sunset clause," stating the prohibitions would be voided if Congress passes a federal law legalizing marijuana.
