Acme will close four supermarket locations, including three in New Jersey.
The Acmes in Elmwood Park, Woodcliff Lake and Weehawken will close by Oct. 2.
Another store in Eastchester, New York, will close by Nov. 4.
An Acme spokesperson explained the decision in a statement, saying, "Like all retailers, we are constantly evaluating our store portfolio and have to look at every angle of the business. These stores have not met our goals for a number of years and we have made the decision to deploy the team and resources to other locations to serve our customers."
An Acme spokesperson says the company is working with affected associate and labor unions, with the goal of placing as many employees as possible at other nearby locations. They did say that some layoffs are likely.
Acme Markets currently has 168 locations. A company representative says they are unaware of what may move into the Eastchester building when Acme closes.
