Two Newark women were killed Tuesday morning when a tractor-trailer overturned onto their car on Interstate 78 in Newark, according to the New Jersey State Police.
Troopers responded around 9:10 a.m. to the crash on the eastbound local lanes near milepost 56.8.
A preliminary investigation found that a Mack tractor hauling a utility trailer was traveling east when it approached a Chevrolet sedan stopped in traffic in the left lane. State police said the truck driver tried to steer away before the tractor-trailer overturned onto the Chevrolet.
The driver of the Chevrolet, 42-year-old Ayesha Wright, and her passenger, 25-year-old Kendra Rouse, both of Newark, suffered fatal injuries.
The truck driver suffered minor injuries.
