‘Barknic’ fundraising event draws crowds to Lackawanna Station in Montclair

Hundreds of people and their dogs packed Lackawanna Station on Saturday for “Barknic,” an annual fundraiser hosted by Wise Animal Rescue.

The indoor event, billed as the nonprofit’s biggest fundraiser to date, ran from noon to 5 p.m. and featured local, primarily dog-themed, vendors along with activities for both people and pups.

“We are working hard towards opening up a rescue center. So a lot of the funds today will be used towards our rescue center,” said Katie O’Connell, Barknic’s event lead coordinator. “And then in addition to helping to save more of the rescue dogs that we have here…So the funds that we raised today will help us care for the dogs that we currently have, and help even more.”

Wise Animal Rescue is a volunteer-run, foster-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that rescues dogs from neglect, abandonment and unsafe living situations, partnering with veterinary practices to nurse them back to health before placing them in permanent homes.
