A 2-year-old boy is in the hospital after falling from a second-floor window that had a faulty screen, according to Bridgeport police.

A frantic call to 911 sent police to the home on Cottage Street around 10 p.m. Monday.

“They found the two-year-old suffering from a head injury, bleeding. Officers administered first aid,” Detective Jeffrey Holtz told News 12.

EMS rushed the toddler to Bridgeport Hospital where Holtz said he was diagnosed with a skull fracture, then brought to Yale New Haven Hospital in critical condition. Meanwhile, police began an investigation, which determined what happened was an accident.

“We found out that the screen was faulty, and the parents stated they had contacted the landlord multiple times about the screen. It was broken. It had too much give,” Holtz stated.

He told News 12 there was a bed right next to the window and police think the young boy may have climbed onto the bed, lost his balance and fallen through the screen to the ground.

“Every home should have safety guards on the windows,” Holtz said.

The multifamily house where this happened did not.

Upcoming warmer weather likely means more windows open, so police want to remind people with young kids to pay extra attention.

“There were numerous children in this household. Everybody was running around and everybody that's a parent knows how quickly a 2-year-old can get out of sight, run away into another room where potentially something could happen,” Holtz explained. “We believe the child is going to survive. In fact, we know that. We're grateful for that, but we're asking people to be vigilant.”

The boy’s family told News 12 he is improving.
