Former Suffolk Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison has written a book about his journey from growing up in Queens to becoming the head of the police department.

The autobiography is titled “The Commissioner: From Street Cop to Top Cop in the NYPD, and the Inside Story of the Hunt for the Gilgo Beach Serial Killer.”

Harrison’s story starts in South Jamaica, Queens, where he says his life could have gone in a different direction, growing up with drug dealers.

Crediting a twist of fate and drive, he writes about his road to becoming the NYPD’s highest-ranking uniformed officer and eventually Police Commissioner of Suffolk County.

One of the book’s self-proclaimed highlights is an insider’s view of “his career-defining case, putting the Gilgo Beach serial killer behind bars.”

Harrison, the first black police commissioner in Suffolk’s history, says he engineered Rex Heuermann’s arrest before stepping down in 2023.

He's now a public safety consultant and advisor to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
