A Somerville man was arrested for allegedly leaving his 15-month-old son alone in a vehicle for 40 minutes.

Syed Zaidi, 50, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, according to Bernards Township police.

Police said the incident took place on June 9 just before 3 p.m. Officers were called to Fellowship Village on Fellowship Road after receiving a 911 call reporting an infant left alone in a vehicle. When officers responded, they found the baby had been left unattended in a 2025 yellow Volkswagen van. Police confirmed the child is Zaidi’s son.

It is not yet known whether the air conditioning was on in the vehicle at the time. Meteorologists said the temperature around 3 p.m. on June 9 was about 85 degrees.

Police said Zaidi was arrested and transported to Somerset County Jail, pending a hearing. No injuries to the child were reported. The case remains under investigation.
