A Newark man has been sentenced to 100 years in prison for the fatal shooting of a 67-year-old man during a robbery on New Year's Eve 2023, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office announced Tuesday.
Jarell Riles, 35, was sentenced after being convicted Feb. 18 of felony murder, murder, robbery and weapons offenses in the death of 67-year-old of Jose Gaona, of Newark. Superior Court Judge Ronald Wigler presided over both the trial and sentencing.

Prosecutors said Riles first robbed another man at gunpoint on Vessey Street during the early morning hours of Dec. 31, 2023, forcing the victim to the ground and striking him with a pistol. He then drove to Malvern Street, where he confronted Gaona at gunpoint, robbed him of his belongings and shot him seven times in the back as Gaona attempted to get back into his vehicle, authorities said.
Under New Jersey's No Early Release Act, Riles must serve 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
