Crews responded to a fire on Buena Vista Avenue in Spring Valley on Tuesday afternoon.
It broke out shortly before 4:20 p.m. on the back side of the house. The Hillcrest Fire Department was the first to respond. Spring Valley, New City and Nanuet assisted.
"I knew I had a job to do, so I knew I had to get in there, listen to my commanding officers and get the job done," said Hillcrest Firefighter Robert Hoyt, who was one of the first on scene. "I went in with the nozzle and then we went down the hallway into the kitchen, where we started hitting it. And then down the hallway to the back bedrooms."
Fire officials tell News 12 that everyone inside the house was able to make it out safely.
"The amount of stuff that they had in the house, the condition of the outside of the house, the condition of the back part of the house, made it a little tough. But, for the most part, it was a pretty clean operation," said Hillcrest Fire Chief Chris Bowers.
One Hillcrest firefighter sustained minor injuries and was treated on scene.
It took crews about 25 minutes to get the fire under control. Crews then began checking for hot spots.
"There's pretty extensive damage to the back section of the house as well as some rooms towards the back of the house," said Bowers.
The American Red Cross told News 12 that they will be assisting those displaced.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
