The first match of the FIFA World Cup is scheduled for June 11, six months away, yet the buildup for New Jersey businesses begins now.

A kickoff ceremony for corporate sponsors in New Jersey was held at Gateway Center in Newark.

With eight of those matches being played at Metlife Stadium, a windfall of opportunity could be had by businesses.

The entire region is expected to benefit from a $3 billion economic impact as millions of people from around the world visit to watch the games.

There will be 48 countries represented in the World Cup.

“The games are the attraction to get people here. Where the opportunity is, is how do we get people to say this is awesome how do I come back,” said Alex Lasry, with the FIFA World Cup 2026 Host Committee.

Lasry says bars, restaurants and corporate sponsors can all convince families and business owners visiting, to come back in the future.

They can do so with their hospitality at watch parties or other game day events linked to matches.

Within that framework, Newark is jumping on board with a World Cup restaurant week.

Ashley Mays, with Newark Happenings, says they will be hosting a restaurant week program.

“We’re intentionally doing the week at the beginning of the tournament to try and establish those repeat visits,” said Mays.

The FIFA World Cup is also expected to provide 20,000 jobs in the region.

The final match of the FIFA World Cup will be played on July 19 at MetLife Stadium.
