Police shoot 'disorderly' man armed with knife in Sayreville

A man was shot by Sayreville police Saturday after police say he refused to drop a knife as he advanced toward an officer.
Sayreville police were called to Kendall Drive in the Parlin section of town at about 6:15 p.m. For reports of a disorderly man "menacing people" and a vehicle. When officers arrived, they spotted the armed man and ordered him to drop the knife. When he refused, an officer opened fire.
"The subject ignored the officer’s commands to drop the knife and advanced towards the officer," the prosecutor's office said in a statement. "The officer subsequently discharged his firearm striking the subject."
The man was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where he was treated for his injuries, the prosecutor's office said.
According to the Middlesex County Prosecutor, the man was charged with multiple offenses for his actions prior to the arrival of police.
The investigation is ongoing, and the prosecutor is asking anyone with information or surveillance footage from the area that evening to contact detectives at 732-745-3711.
