A 13-year-old was pronounced dead after being pulled from the ocean in Belmar on Friday evening.

Belmar police say they received several 911 calls about swimmers in distress off the 8th Avenue beach around 6:30 p.m. Once officers arrived, they found that one person was out of the water, but a teen swimmer was still missing.

Police say that about an hour later, the teen was found unresponsive in the water off the 7th Avenue Beach. They say lifesaving efforts were made, but the teen died at Jersey Shore University Hospital a short time later.

The victim's name was not provided due to their age.

This is the latest in a string of water deaths at the Jersey Shore in recent weeks. Many have occurred after lifeguards had gone home for the day.

Seaside Heights recently passed new rules for its beaches to close early on days when ocean conditions are rough, following a recent drowning incident.
