Newark officials gathered on Tuesday to dedicate two firehouses in honor of two firefighters who died in the Port Newark cargo ship fire last year.
Engine-16 Ladder-8 on Ferry Street will now honor Capt. Augusto Acabou and Engine-27 Ladder-4 will honor Capt. Wayne Brooks, Jr. These are the firehouses where both men served.
A fire sparked inside the ship in July 2023, which was stationed at Port Newark. The ship was packed with more than 1,000 vehicles.
Firefighters rushed on board to extinguish the fire. Acabou and Brooks were killed.
The fire burned for days until crews were able to get it under control.
Acabou and Brooks, Jr. were both posthumously promoted to the rank of captain.
