Fire officials say a young girl died during a fire at a multi-family home in Plainfield early Sunday morning.
Another child was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
Fire officials said the fire happened around 1:20 a.m. on North Avenue inside a two-and-a-half story building where neighbors said four families lived in.
Fire and police rescued some of residents from the windows with ladders. The child was found only after fire crews were able to reenter the building.
A neighbor who was too distraught to speak on camera told News 12 New Jersey the fire moved quickly and that he could hear people inside the house screaming.
According to that neighbor, the little girl who died in the fire was only 5-years old and the other child who was treated for smoke inhalation at JFK Medical Center in Edison is her 11-year-old brother.
The Red Cross said they are helping 21 people who were displaced with their immediate needs including housing, food and clothes as well as disaster mental health services.
