Dawn Zimmer was sworn in as Hoboken's acting mayor to replace former Mayor Peter Cammarano who officially resigned his post effective noon Friday.
Cammarano was arrested on corruption charges and accused of accepting $25,000 in bribes amid the federal corruption probe last week. The city attorney publicly read Cammarano's letter of resignation outside of City Hall.
Acting Mayor Zimmer lost to Cammarano by 161 votes in the June election. Since her defeat, Zimmer says she has been committed to bringing an "open and honest" government to Hoboken and the resignation will help her do so.
Zimmer says she will put the power of zoning approvals back into the hands of the City Council as her first order of business. She hopes this course of action will prevent corruption.
