A woman who says she was the victim of human trafficking is crediting a Newark charity group for saving her.
Lucy Mugambi says her life of slavery has now turned into the American dream. Mugambi says a family from Kenya brought her to the United States to work as a nanny. However, she says she was worked constantly, kept isolated and beaten daily upon her arrival in the U.S.
Though Mugambi didn't have much contact with the outside world, she says she would sneak onto the Internet to speak with friends. She said a friend connected her with Catholic Charities in Newark. The group was able to rescue her and help turn her life around.
Catholic Charities helped Mugambi find a job and a home in Jersey City. She has since remarried and has a new baby. Her 9-year-old son, who she last saw in Kenya four years ago, is also coming to live with her in Jersey City. Mugambi has already enrolled her son in the school district.
