Woman charged after dead mother's remains found in Jersey City apartment
A woman accused of barricading herself in a Hudson County apartment has been charged with concealing her dead mother’s remains after the older woman’s body was found in the unit.
County prosecutors say 53-year-old Cheryl Gatling refused to allow Jersey City police inside the apartment when they arrived there Saturday night to conduct a welfare check.
The standoff lasted for about three hours before Gatling eventually opened the door and police found a body believed to be that of 78-year-old Dorothy Gatling.
Authorities say the body had been in the apartment “for an extended period of time."
It was not immediately known how the woman died or if additional charges would be filed.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
