Several eyewitnesses dispute police accounts of what led to a man dying shortly after being arrested by Newark cops.
Authorities say Baire Farrell went into cardiac arrest in the back of an ambulance on his way to the hospital. Police had been called to a bar Farrell had been drinking at because the man was allegedly harassing costumers. Officers say when they arrived, Farrell became extremely violent and began tearing his clothes off as he ran down the street. According to Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy, it took everything the officers had to bring the man down.
"It was a violent struggle ? there [were] six officers trying to restrain one person, those scenes are pretty hectic," he says.
Witnesses Emily and Andreia Reid, however, claim they saw police Tasering a handcuffed man on the ground. Another witness who wished to remain anonymous told News 12 New Jersey he saw the deceased man get hit by a police cruiser.
McCarthy says those accounts don't match the ones police have taken from other witnesses. Police and prosecutors are awaiting results of toxicology tests to determine what may have caused Farrell's death. Meanwhile, the investigation continues.
