Wildwood police are warning residents of a scam involving people pretending to be police to get money out of victims.
Police say the scammers use the department’s phone number to call victims as well as other law enforcement phone numbers, telling them they have active warrants out and they demand money via online money transfer applications.
They say scammers using any number on a caller ID can easily be done by using caller ID masking applications.
“Please know that the Wildwood Police Department will never, under any circumstances contact anyone by phone or otherwise and solicit money in any way,” police wrote in a message on Facebook.
Authorities say residents can contact the Wildwood Police Department at 609-522-0222 to confirm the legitimacy of any call or someone identifying themselves as a member of the Wildwood Police Department.
