A new celebration has been added to the New Jersey calendar: the Day of the Girl.
According to a release on Gov. Phil Murphy's website, the holiday itself is inspired by "International Day of the Girl Child."
It is celebrated on October 11, and Murphy says his intention in officially signing the celebration into the calendar is to "galvanize the support of New Jersey's residents and community-based organizations to better girls' lives and provide them with equal opportunities to reach their full potential."
The United Nations General Assembly established the holiday in December of 2011.
