Former governor Christie Whitman and former Attorney General John Degnan were tapped to head a commission looking into the governor?s security operations Friday.
The panel, announced Monday, will be tasked with investigating the state police Executive Protection Unit (EPU). The announcement took place following Governor Jon Corzine?s Garden State Parkway accident. In that accident, police determined Corzine was not wearing a seatbelt. They also learned the state trooper driving his vehicle was going 91 mph before the crash.
Whitman and Degnan, who were both once guarded by the EPU, say they will not be focusing on the incident itself or who was at fault. Instead, the eight-member commission will come up with practical guidelines on how the EPU can operate better.
The commission plans to have a final report made public in two months. However, it will not make certain facts that could compromise the governor?s security available to the public.
