(06/15/07) IRVINGTON ? Hazmat crews were on the scene in Irvington Friday morning after witnesses say a woman threw white powder at a bus driver.
Investigators have determined the white powder was non-toxic. The incident originated in Newark at approximately 8:05 and ended with the Hazmat presence in Irvington.
According to police, the suspect became irate when she couldn?t come up with exact change to ride the NJ Transit bus. At that point, witnesses said she threw the powder at the female driver.
About 50 emergency workers later descended on the scene to investigate. They have since determined the substance was likely baby powder. The driver is being treated and is assisting police.
The suspect is still on the loose. She could be charged with aggravated assault in the incident.
