Several municipal buildings in Washington Township will be getting some much-needed repairs after the town council passed an ordinance for funding.
Many of the buildings are in states of disrepair.
The concrete floor of the Washington Township firehouse garage is sinking.
“We have to have a guy spotting from the front watching [the firetruck] back in,” says volunteer firefighter Lt. Zach Moros.
The ceiling in the garage is so low that one of the ladder trucks needs to have a 300-gallon water tank pushing down on it at all times.
“If there’s not a full tank of water the truck will sit toward the front and the back end will go upwards,” Moros says.
The township's maintenance facility has so many leaks and cracks that officials say it needs to be taken down all together.
The township’s police department did not have gun lockers or hand soap for years.
“We were totally surprised,” says Council President Robert Bruno.
The council now passed an ordinance to borrow close to $3 million in bonding. Bruno says that the state of the municipal buildings cannot be ignored any longer.
"We're already pushing the purchase requisitions through, we're getting quotes on a lot of the issues here,” he says. “We have someone checking the ventilation… So we're starting."
The council president says most of the money will be used on the maintenance facility. He also says that the council will try to figure out how they can gain height at the fire house.
News 12 is told that the police officers now have hand soap.
