A vigil to remember a pup who died after going missing in Jersey City was held Friday night in Hoboken.
The story about the one-and-a-half-year-old golden doodle known as Mac who went missing while in the care of his dog sitter went viral on social media.
Mac was left with a woman his owners thought was a professional dog sitter.
When his owners made plans to pick him up as scheduled, the sitter and the dog were nowhere to be found.
Several days later, the sitter contacted the owners to tell them the dog was missing.
"There's definitely a void in our lives. It's very quiet and it's just really hard," said Mac's owner Diego Chaves.
Jersey City police are involved and they're still investigating.
"Really, I just want to figure out what happened. It's fortunate that I was able to get back Mac, regardless of the circumstances, I was able to get him back and my focus is just to figure out how he got to that point," Chaves said.
Dog owners and dog lovers gathered at Church Square Park to remember Mac by lighting candles as members of both the Hoboken and Jersey City dog communities consoled each other and tried to make sense of what happened.
"We want all the pets to be happy, so when something goes wrong with a dog that's lost or something terrible like this happens, we all band together," said dog walker and vigil organizer Will Ferman.
Some animal lovers who came with their pets to the vigil said they're calling for changes to be made in the pet care industry and demanded a more rigorous screening process for sitters and walkers.
