The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has issued a precautionary boil water advisory in Hoboken as the city deals with a major water main break.
DEP officials say that the advisory was put into place due to fluctuations in water pressure “caused by efforts to stabilize service.”
“Customers, even if their water is filtered at home, must boil their water for one minute and allow it to cool for the following uses: drinking, cooking, baking, washing dishes, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets or other consumption,” the DEP wrote in a statement.
The water main break happened Monday near Observer Highway and Madison Street while PSE&G crews were doing some gas main work.
The break caused Hoboken University Medical Center to evacuate some patients, Hoboken schools were closed and Stevens Institute of Technology announced classes would be held virtually.
Veolia Water officials say that crews have isolated the break and were restoring water pressure to the city.
The DEP says that Veolia will also continue to collect samples and monitor water quality in the distribution system and that the company will work with the DEP to inform residents when the advisory is lifted.
Anyone with any questions or concerns can call Veolia Water at 1-800-422-0141.
