United Airlines is expanding its international footprint at Newark Liberty International Airport with new nonstop destinations beginning next year.

The airline announced new service from Newark to Luxembourg City, Luxembourg; Marseille, France; Ibiza and Valencia, Spain; Terceira, Portugal; Ljubljana, Slovenia; Olbia in Sardinia; and Catania in Sicily.

The new routes are scheduled to launch in March.

United said six of the destinations will be served nonstop from the United States only through Newark.

CEO Scott Kirby said the expansion is a major win for New Jersey travelers and the state's economy.

"Newark is now the most reliable of the three New York City airports. It's still the New York airspace, but it's still the most reliable of the three," Kirby said.

"It's a huge benefit to the New Jersey region. All of this new growth, new routes, international routes are really what drive economic activity. They're great for customers that live here, but they also drive connections around the globe."

United says the expansion is part of the largest international network growth in the airline's history.
