(AP) - A New Jersey state assemblyman and former mayor has pleaded not guilty to more corruption charges.
Former Perth Amboy Mayor Joseph Vas entered the plea Tuesday to state charges that he illegally got the city to pay his medical bills, had a contractor give him $25,000 in free home repairs, got the city to pay a $58,000 catering bill that was not put up for bid and illegally solicited campaign contributions from city workers.
The indictment on these charges came in May.
Vas was previously indicted on other conspiracy charges by a state grand jury. And in July, he was arrested in a federal conspiracy probe. He has denied all the charges.
Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts has suspended the Democrat's payand benefits. Vas remains free on $25,000 bail.
