A Bergenfield man has been charged in a fatal hit-and-run that killed a 74-year-old pedestrian in Hackensack, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

Authorities said Hackensack police responded just before 1 a.m. Friday to Essex Street and Summit Avenue after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle. The victim was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Investigators said a 2021 Honda Pilot, driven by 38-year-old Terrence J. Hedden, was traveling west on Essex Street when it struck the man as he tried to cross Summit Avenue. Prosecutors said Hedden left the scene without stopping or helping the victim.
