A tree removal company’s crane nearly toppled over in Cresskill Monday morning.
The crane was located between two homes on Roosevelt Street.
“I kind of feel bad for them, but nobody got hurt,” says neighbor Glen Lockhart.
Lockhart owns the home from where the tree was being removed. He says the crane operator seemed to underestimate what the machine could handle.
“Too big of a piece. I’m no crane operator. I was watching and thinking, ‘I hope they know what they’re doing,’” Lockhart says.
The crane operator was attempting to carry a tree over the homes to the street when the boom tipped over, sending the truck up into utility wires.
"We evacuated the residents on both sides of the crane and three houses directly behind the crane,” says Cresskill Fire Chief Christopher Ulshoefer.
There was a concern that the truck would catapult forward or even back and crash into homes. But that did not happen thanks to the crew with Tumino's Towing, who stepped in and got to work.
"The crane was in the crux of the tree, so we had to lift that and control the descent of the truck so everything could work in unison,” says Nick Muzzy, of Tumino’s Towing.
If the crane hadn't lodged itself in the tree, it might have toppled over.
Muzzy says that after the truck was leveled, the engine was turned on so the boom could operate and be pulled in. After three hours of work, the truck and crane were back on the ground.
A new crane was brought in later and the tree was removed.
