Thousands of people got a jump start to the holiday weekend with hope to beat the traffic.
Many travelers who took the New Jersey Turnpike Thursday said starting their holiday trips early was a good idea, due to little or no traffic.
Some travelers said that roads were wide open for most of the day.
"The worst we had, the slowest we had was getting onto the George Washington Bridge," said Art Schuppe, of Long Island.
According to AAA, nearly 2.5 million New Jersey residents will be on the roadways starting Saturday through Jan. 2.
