New Jersey and New York will now be able to track hazardous freight trains moving throughout their states with just the click of a mouse.
Both states will now share information with CSX Transportation, which handles the most toxic material on the rails. Previously, officials needed to call CSX for information on the cargo and destination of freight trains.
Now, the information is available through a shared online program called NOW, or Network Operations Workstation.
N.J., N.Y. and CSX are also conducting joint police and first-responder training in the event of a terrorist attack, and will provide communities with lists of hazardous materials transported to their areas.
CSX is one of the three freight service providers in New Jersey. The other two, Norfolk Southern and Canadian Pacific, have yet to share their freight information.
For an interview with the New Jersey Homeland Security director about the program, go to channel 612 on your iO digital cable box and select iO extra.
