An Atlantic City man was sentenced Tuesday to five years in state prison for assaulting a domestic violence victim last year, authorities said.

Police responded June 28, 2025, to Atlantic Avenue for a report of a domestic assault. The victim told officers that Derrick Lewis, 64, of Atlantic City, repeatedly kicked and punched her in the face and ribs and strangled her inside a vehicle.

She was able to escape and seek help from a bystander, authorities said.

Lewis fled before officers arrived but was located and arrested later that day by the Atlantic City Police Department.

Lewis pleaded guilty Dec. 5, 2025, to aggravated assault on a domestic violence victim. He must serve 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole under New Jersey's No Early Release Act, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.
