Volunteers gave a helping hand in Toms River Sunday in honor of Earth Day. Community members cleaned up Long Swamp Creek, in an effort to preserve several bodies of water, including Toms River and Barnegat Bay, which are fed by the creek. One volunteers said they found clothing, sneakers and more than two bags of trash, such as coffee cups and bottles. Volunteers say cleaning up the garbage also helps the wildlife thrive. Experts say aside from picking up trash on Earth Day, there are everyday changes that can be made to live a more environmentally friendly life. These changes include recycling paper and plastics and saving energy by turning off appliances when not in use. Experts say it?s also a good idea to replace standard light bulbs with energy efficient fluorescents that will reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
