A new fare pilot at NJ Transit stations is changing how riders board trains in Secaucus and other locations. Ticket collectors are scanning fares on the platform before commuters step onto trains, according to NJ Transit.
The pilot began Oct. 9 and is meant to make fare collection more efficient during peak weekday travel. Riders said they are used to showing tickets on board but are adjusting to the earlier checks.
Some riders welcomed the change and said paying for public transportation is expected. Others said the shift helps reduce delays caused by riders who need internet access to activate mobile tickets.
NJ Transit said the pilot is part of a broader modernization plan. That includes new eight‑foot‑high fare gates at Secaucus Junction and Newark Airport, an expanded fare‑pay card system and new mobile validation devices for train crews.
Officials said the goal is to protect fare revenue and support riders who already pay. Commuters said fairness and consistency remain important as they navigate daily travel.
