Drivers can expect to pay more for tolls along the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway starting on Sunday.
Motorists will see the increase at 6:30 a.m. on Jan. 1, when tolls go up 53 percent on the Turnpike and 50 percent on the Parkway. That means people driving the length of turnpike will pay $13.85 instead of $9.05 one-way.
New Jersey Turnpike Authority officials say the additional revenue from the two-phase toll increase is not being used to pay operating costs. Instead, they say the revenue is funding a $7 billion capital program and other transportation projects.
The rate increase comes just four months after the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey increased tolls on bridges and tunnels into New York by 50 percent.
