A toddler is dead after a raging fire tore through a Jesup Place apartment building Wednesday in what police say may have been a lovers' quarrel.
Firefighters were met with billowing smoke and a wall of flames at 64 Jesup Pl. Officials say the fire started in a fifth-floor apartment and spread to the sixth floor because the apartment door was left open. Responders found a 2-year-old and her 40-year-old father, both unconscious, on the sixth floor. The toddler, who officials say was burned, died at the hospital and the man remains in critical condition. Officials say other tenants escaped to safety and will be able to return to their homes. The Red Cross is working to relocate tenants on the affected floors.
Police say the fire appears to have been deliberately set. Investigators are questioning a female tenant who may have been fighting with her boyfriend.
