Car thieves in Montclair left a stolen car behind only to steal another vehicle.
Authorities say two thieves stole a 2023 Audi SQ8 on Highland Avenue early Tuesday morning. The thieves used a crowbar to get inside a home and find the keys to the car, according to authorities.
Police say they contacted the homeowner who was out of the country. The resident then confirmed to police through surveillance that his home had been burglarized and his vehicle was stolen.
Authorities say the accused thieves arrived at the home in a different stolen car, a 2019 Mercedes Benz from Newark, which they left behind at the house after locating keys to the Audi. Police say responding officers located the Benz parked and still running.
According to police, the surveillance video shows two young Black men who were wearing gloves walking in the rear of the property at 4:59 a.m. toward a window that was used to gain entry.
