Tenants of a Newark apartment complex who were forced out due to flooding on Sunday are moving back home.
The building is located along N. 9th Street and Park Avenue.
With bags and boxes of their clothing and belongings, families started moving back into the four-story apartment building at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The Valdez family spent the last three days between a shelter at the First Avenue School and a relative’s house. Illiana Valdez was nearly in tears as she told us how difficult it's been.
“We’ve been staying at my mom’s house, we sleep there but then we go back to the shelter at First Avenue. We eat breakfast lunch and dinner over there.” says Valdez.
She was especially concerned about her three young boys.
“They were very stressed out, they were like worrying about school worrying about what about our house? Will we go back to sleep in our bed," says Valdez.
A total of 64 tenants were forced to evacuate on Sunday after water, which collected on the roof, started spilling into the building and down the stairway.
At least one unit had portions of its ceiling collapse.
Oscar Valdez says he was told there was no collapse, rather a drain on the roof was clogged, which prevented 3 feet of water from going anywhere.
“You could see the line as soon as they took the blockage out you could see it draining right out," says Valdez.
A representative from Boomers Management who was at the building on Wednesday, declined to speak with News 12 about the repairs or the lack of hotels for residents.
News 12 did see a representative from Newark Emergency Management checking on the status of the building.
The Red Cross stepped in to provide shelter, food and clothing for those families who had nowhere to go.
